Synposis (from the publisher): Amelia Peabody returns to the Nile with her sexy, irascible archaeologist husband Emerson and an entourage that now includes Amelia's catastrophically precocious son Ramses as well as her Egyptian cat Bastet. Emerson has promised his wife a pyramid to excavate; when this hope is frustrated by de Morgan, Director General of Antiquities, Amelia turns her boundless energies to detection, investigating the mysterious death of a dealer in illegal artifacts. There appears to be a Master Criminal, and at first she encounters more questions than solutions. Who stole the mummy case from the Baroness's dahabeeyah? Who broke into the Emersons' hotel room and spilled the ink? Why was there a bottle of ink in Amelia's suitcase in the first place?

When the Emersons move from Cairo to the site of their winter excavations, their problems only increase. De Morgan, possessor of the pyramids for which Amelia yearns, visits the dauntless pair often to boast of his triumphs and cast Emerson into a fury of frustration.

Murder, arson, and burglary plague the Emersons. Ramses is up to something, but not even Amelia knows what. Will Emerson find the secret of the Black Pyramid? Will Amelia unmask the Master Criminal before that possibly apocryphal personage murders the entire Emerson family - including Bastet?
